There are several lawsuits pending against Takeda Pharmaceuticals, the manufacturer of the drug Actos. The Type 2 Diabetes drug has raised concerns that it may increase the risk of bladder cancer. Actos is an oral diabetes drug that contains the active ingredient Pioglitazone. It is used either by itself or in combination with other prescription drugs to treat Type 2 (non-insulin-dependent) Diabetes. It is not used to treat Type 1 Diabetes or Diabetic Ketoacidosis. The drug works by increasing the body’s sensitivity to insulin. Actos has also been sold under the names ActoplusMet, Competact, and Duetact.

Actos is manufactured by Takeda Pharmaceuticals and was the tenth best selling drug in the U.S. in 2008. Many patients who had been using another Type 2 Diabetes drug, Avandia, switched to Actos believing it to be safer. Two studies have indicated that those using Actos for more than 12 months have a 40% higher risk of developing bladder cancer. The two studies prompted French and German drug regulators to recall the drug. The FDA is requiring new warnings of the increased risk of bladder cancer on all drugs that contain Pioglitazone.
