“Of the almost 130,000 motorcyclists in Oklahoma in 2011, over 1,400 were killed or injured,” said Oklahoma Highway Safety Office Director, Garry Thomas upon the introduction of the website. “The need of a single source on motorcycle safety and education was evident.” The new website includes educational videos on the homepage, as well as links to other websites that promote motorcycle safety, and all content is maintained by the Advisory Committee for Motorcycle Safety and Education, established to address motorcycle safety issues in Oklahoma. Motorcycle accidents are a major cause of serious injuries and tragic loss of life in the state of Oklahoma, and authorities are doing their best to reduce this risk by establishing training programs and promoting motorcycle safety and education. Unfortunately, motorcycle accidents continue to claim that lives of Oklahomans at an alarming rate.

In recent years, Oklahoma police departments have introduced motorcycle training courses “designed to make riders safer and provide a bridge between basic rider courses and advanced rider courses,” said OHSO Assistant Director Kevin Behrens. But access to information about these courses isn’t all the new website has to offer. “There’s also legal information about motorcycle laws as well as PSA’s we’ve made for motorists about sharing the road with motorcycles,” Behrens said. Due to their small profile, motorcyclists are at an increased risk of being involved in a serious accident, compared to passenger cars and commercial trucks. Also because of their size and overall lack of protection, motorcycle riders are significantly more likely to be injured or killed in a collision with another vehicle.
