OK Authorities Announce Decline in Oklahoma Accident Fatalities in August

The OK Department of Public Safety recently issued a report indicating that the rate of fatalities resulting from Oklahoma car, motorcycle and pedestrian accidents during the month of August this year marks a drop from the same time period in 2011. According to the Dept. of Public Safety, 56 people were killed in Oklahoma motor vehicle accidents in August 2012, a considerable decline from the 72 people killed in August 2011. In addition, the total fatality rate for 2012 currently stands at 521, a drop from the 598 accident fatalities reported between January and August of last year. Despite the marked decline in OK accident deaths though, there are still far too many injuries and fatalities caused by avoidable accidents in Oklahoma. Oklahoma Fatal Accident Statistics

According to the Oklahoma Department of Public Safety’s report, of the 56 fatalities that occurred during August 2012, eight victims were motorcycle riders and five were pedestrians. Two-thirds of the people who were killed in Oklahoma accidents were not wearing seatbelts at the time of the collision, and alcohol was a factor in at least one of the Oklahoma crashes. Furthermore, 44 of the fatality victims in August 2012 were male and 12 were female, and 20 were between the ages of 21 and 30 – a statistic that represents the largest number of fatalities for any age group during that month. A total of fifty of the people who were killed in Oklahoma accidents in August of this year were Oklahoma residents, while six were residents of other U.S. states.
